gene networks as design material

thinking about biological networks not only as analysis outputs, but as interfaces for discovery.

networks as reasoning tools

a gene network is not just a visualization. it is a way of reasoning. when genes become nodes and relationships become edges, biological questions stop feeling like flat lists and start becoming structures you can move through.

that shift matters because disease signals rarely appear in isolation. they show up through groups of genes, shared pathways, local neighborhoods, and unexpected connections.

what flat tables miss

flat tables are useful, but they can hide the shape of a biological system. a table can tell you what changed. a network can help you ask what that change is near, what it might influence, and whether several weak signals become stronger together.

in colorectal cancer and other disease work, this kind of thinking changes what stands out. a gene may not be dramatic on its own, but its position in a network can make it biologically interesting.

interfaces for discovery

i am interested in tools that let people explore biology visually and interactively. not graphs for decoration, but graphs that let someone move between overview and evidence.

a good network interface should help a researcher notice patterns, compare modules, inspect uncertainty, and ask a better next question.
